She is the one
That when my mom placed her in my arms at the hospital
I yelled “if it’s a boy then you have to send it back!”
I got my baby doll sister that day
She is the one
Where the baby doll phase quickly faded
And the majority of our childhood was spent
With her loving me effortlessly
And me trying to murder her for existing
Her smothering me with affection
Me, returning the love by squishing spiders in her hair
But if the neighbor girls said one unkind thing about her
I would barrel across the cul - de - sac
Teeth bared and wild eyed
Shove the little bullies into the grass
Shove them harder towards the grass if they attempted to get up and face me
And throw that forever baby doll of a sister over my shoulder
And stomp away home
She is the one
That as kids she happily obliged
To me smearing a blue chalk paste
All across her body
Turning her into a smurf
But it didn’t matter what was happening,
She was just thrilled we were playing together
She is the one
That survived my childhood tortures
And with the same energy that went into nearly murdering each other
Shifted into the deepest friendship
She is the one
Who shares my same laugh
Even if I tease
She is trying to be me
She is the one
Whose voice
Heals the souls lucky enough to listen
Whose voice
Carries through canyons
Whose voice
More powerful than the crashing of waves
She is the one
Whose tears run constantly down her cheeks
Because her heart is so big
Her capacity to love is so deep
That rivers of love flow from her eyes
I know the gift it is to have a sister
I know the rare gift it is to have a sister that is my best friend
I know the rare and sacred gift it is to have a sister that is not only my best friend, but a piece of my soul that exists only for her.
I know we have to die on the same day
Because I only know living
With her by my side
